BUILT BY PRACTITIONERS
Practitioners, not pageant judges
Small Biz Website Builder Rankings is written by people who build and run small-business websites every week for trades, salons, cafes and local outfits where the owner answers the phone.
We have launched those sites, paid the renewal invoices when they came due, and switched platforms often enough to know exactly where the exit doors are blocked. That experience shapes every ranking on this site.
What that means for you
- Launched sites, not just reviewed them
- Paid real renewal invoices and saw the jumps first-hand
- Switched platforms, so we know the exit costs
We are not a design agency and have no portfolio to defend. Our job is to tell you what a builder will cost after the first year.
Why cost and leads beat design awards
Most website builder reviews judge the wrong things. They reward template galleries, polish and how a homepage looks in a screenshot. Those are pleasant, but they are the uniform, not the work. A plumber doesn't need an award-winning homepage. A plumber needs the phone to ring, a booking form that visitors actually finish, and a bill that doesn't creep upward at every renewal.
So Small Biz Website Builder Rankings scores every builder on three tests. The first is real monthly cost, counted year two included: renewal jumps, forced plan upgrades, and the business email that quietly becomes a second subscription. The second is time to launch, judged from each builder's documented setup flow rather than a stopwatch we never ran. The third is lead-capture machinery per dollar: how many forms, bookings, chat and contact tools you get on the plan you can actually afford. Prices were checked against each builder's own pricing in August 2026, and we say so wherever a figure could have moved.
A site that doesn't produce calls is just a brochure you're renting.
That is the standard we hold every ranking to, from the best website builder for small business board down to the smallest note on a plan. If you want the numbers behind the bill, see what a small business website should cost each month.

Every builder on Small Biz Website Builder Rankings is judged the way you would judge any recurring expense. Here is what we commit to before you compare a single plan, so you know exactly what sits behind each score.
- Every published price is checked against the builder's own pricing page, with the date noted beside it.
- Anything we could not confirm first-hand is flagged in the copy as an estimate, never presented as fact.
- Fine-print traps are spelled out, including renewal jumps, forced plan upgrades and annual charges taken up front.
- We do not publish invented case studies. A salon or plumber in our examples is a worked example, not a client we are claiming.
- Some links are affiliate links, and commissions never change a score. Read the full affiliate disclosure for details.
- Price corrections are prioritised above everything else, so a stale renewal figure gets fixed quickly.
